Description of Tool or App

ihurricane HD is a free hurricane tracking iOS mobile app. ihurricane HD allows one to track a specific hurricane's path (or multiple hurricanes within the current calendar year) on an interactive map. ihurricane HD also provides weather bulletins, weather advisories and satellite/radar images of current weather conditions.

Benefits of Tool or App

-provides various satellite and radar images of current weather conditions

-allows one to track multiple storms - both active and inactive - (from the current calendar year)

-provides multiple plot/tracking points or coordinates that include basic scientific, weather-related data (i.e. wind speed, pressure, latitude and longitude, etc.)

-allows one to determine the distance the hurricane is from his/her current location

-provides email alerts

-provides a high-resolution interactive map

-identifies hurricanes in the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific areas

-provides weather advisories and weather bulletins, weather forecasts and basic hurricane information (i.e. Saffir-Simpson scale ratings)

-includes Facebook and Twitter tabs


Constraints of Tool or App

-only provides information on hurricanes from current calendar year

-weather bulletins are not in student-friendly language; would be difficult to sift through the content and find the applicable information needed to participate in class discussions

-ihurricane HD free is not free of advertisements (note: advertisements include marketing for online games, retailers, etc.)

-ihurricane HD is not web-based

-includes Facebook and Twitter tabs; therefore, strong monitoring would need to be considered to ensure students did not get "off-task"


How To Use Tool or App

To use ihurricane HD, one simply needs to download the app to his/her iOS device. In downloading and using the app on both an iphone and an ipad, no technical errors were noticed. One needs an Apple ID to be able to download the free app.

-to track hurricanes and collect data to determine the relationship among certain hurricane specifics (i.e. wind speed as it relates to air pressure)

-use the information in the weather bulletins to determine future weather conditions/forecasts

-engage in comparative analyses among multiple hurricanes and determine reasons for intensity/destruction levels

-to reinforce and/or enhance lesson on hurricanes/severe weather patterns

-to reinforce the criteria/optimal weather conditions needed to ensure the development and sustainability of hurricanes

-to provide real-time data regarding the current weather conditions and use such information to engage in class discussions regarding future weather forecasts
